Endgrain Woodblocks

Endgrain blocks are employed by wood engravers because even, precise cutting across the growth rings is possible in a way that side grain would not allow. Relatively few woods are good for this purpose, and only a very small number perform exceptionally well. Boxwood is the traditional choice due to its outstanding, and unique, properties. Genuine Boxwood (Buxus Serpervirens) is very dense, even and easy to engrave, allowing the artist to engrave the finest possible lines without crumbling. English boxwood blocks have always been much sought after. Lemon is a very good alternative to boxwood. Although not quite as dense as boxwood, it is used by many leading engravers on a regular basis, especially when larger blocks are required due to its more modest cost.
