Intaglio Printmaker Prize Winner: Kathleen Patterson

The team at Intaglio Printmaker are delighted to announce that Kathleen Patterson was awarded our prize at the 2025 Festival of Print, the annual showcase presented by East London Printmakers at the Mile End Art Pavilion. Her winning work, ‘Untitled’, first caught our eye with what we assumed was the fluid richness of a lithograph, only to discover on closer inspection that it was, in fact, an etching. We loved the painterly depth and expressive sensitivity Kathleen achieved through this technique.

Please could you tell us a bit more about the inspiration behind the work?

I made the image for this print fairly quickly as I’d already been working on other prints and images on a similar theme.  Most of the other images were very intensively drawn onto an etching plate, but for this one I decided to make an image directly from memory or imagination not working from a photograph or drawing. It was an emotional time of life for me.

What made you get into printmaking?

I first did fine art printmaking when I was at art college, quite a long time ago. I have always made prints on and off since then when I can find a workshop. After a few life changes about 10-15 years ago, I had a need to return to drawing and printmaking.

Tell us about your other works – are they similar or different? Do you tend to work within one technique?

If more of my prints are seen together, the connection can probably be seen. I like to try out different techniques of printmaking. Sometimes I do more of one technique if its convenient. If I have access to an etching workshop, for example.

Each method brings out different qualities. I think etching can bring out a more serious quality.

What would be on your ultimate Intaglio Printmaker wish list?

There seems to be so many items to buy in Intaglio Printmaker – it is hard to choose. Just quickly, a roller of some kind and also I noticed a hand printing press by Akua which could be handy.

If you could own one artwork, what would it be?

So many beautiful artworks, but would I want to own it? Maybe it would be better in a gallery. Thinking of printmaking, I like Edvard Munch – one of the lesser known prints, maybe a lithograph.

Congratulations on your win, Kathleen!
