The team at Intaglio are very pleased to share that Ziyi Tang was the recipient of our award at this year’s ‘Small But Mighty’ exhibition at the Bankside Gallery. The exhibition showcased all forms of printmaking and highlighted the powerful, ambitious and impressive nature of works created on a small scale. Ziyi’s winning print ‘Full Moon’ was chosen for its fine level of detail and whimsical, dreamlike quality. We loved the objects of youth that Ziyi has playfully illustrated and symbolised in this etching. We caught up with Ziyi to find out more about her process and inspiration.

Please could you tell us a bit more about the inspiration behind the work?
This piece is part of my chair series, which explores the fantasies and rebelliousness of young adults through chairs as representative characters. Each chair has its own unique history, filled with the memories of those who have sat upon it. Some have witnessed significant moments in history, while others have been companions for daily tasks. Some chairs have been cherished and passed down through generations, while others have been discarded and forgotten.
What made you get into printmaking?Â
I studied for both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Camberwell College of Arts, where I was fortunate to have access to excellent printmaking facilities and skilled technicians. My etching teacher, Brian Hodgson, played a crucial role in my journey. He encouraged me to experiment and introduced me to various techniques, which greatly influenced my development as an artist.
Tell us about your other works – are they similar or different? Do you tend to work within one technique?
I have created 15 prints featuring different chair designs, all using etching techniques similar to this piece. Currently, I’m exploring a theme centered around the body and spirit, experimenting with soap ground. I also work with lithography and monotypes, which allows me to diversify my artistic expression.
What would be on your ultimate Intaglio Printmaker wish list?
A burnisher/scraper.Â
If you could own 1 artwork, what would it be?
Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights.
