Japanese Side Grain

‘Side grain’ is a smooth Magnolia wood we ship from Japan prepared specially for woodcut relief printing. Unlike ‘end grain’ (used in engraving), ‘side grain’ is cut along the tree’s growth rings. It’s softer, easier to carve, and perfect for bold, expressive prints where the natural wood texture shines through, and both sides can be used too.
